Besides being an unsightly nuisance, pests like cockroaches, mosquitoes, rats, and mice can spread serious diseases. These pests are typically drawn to the places in your home that are not sanitary. This makes it understandable that they have the capability of posing health threats to your whole family.
Infestations of any kind can grow and spread quickly. At the same time, the risk of the diseases they can cause does as well. They contaminate food, the air and household surfaces. Rats or mice can pass on a disease to humans called Leptospirosis. This is an infection that can be mild or so severe that it is fatal. The symptoms include headaches, fever, muscular pains, diarrhea and vomiting. In severe cases this disease causes the lungs to bleed. There are over a dozen strains of this disease, one of which is Weil’s Disease. This causes kidney failure and jaundice. Treatment can include antibiotics and dialysis.
Rats spread the Bubonic Plague. This is a treatable disease and although cases are rare, they do still occur and they have been recently documented in California. If not treated, this is a deadly illness. Mosquitos can transmit malaria and the Zika virus.
Cockroaches are also capable of transmitting diseases like Typhoid, dysentery and other illnesses. The allergies they aggravate are only worse in homes with pets, tobacco smoke and dust mites. Fleas are a problem for homes with pets, but when they infest a home they can cause diseases like tapeworm to the humans that live there. They can also lead to Cat Scratch Fever in humans that get bit by a cat infected by a flea.
Young children are especially susceptible to the illnesses borne by pests. For this reason, it is crucial to get any type of infestation treated as soon as possible. If a home has a few insects here and there, it is possible to try and get them under control using insecticide products found at grocery or hardware stores. The risks to a family’s health from pests are serious and they are real.
